Lore
Before Professor Kilobyte, there was Dr. Eryk Vinter: a Swedish-born prodigy working for NeuroDyne Systems, a multinational technology conglomerate specializing in neural computing and synthetic cognition.
Vinter considered human mortality less an inevitability than an engineering flaw. His work eventually became Project Kilobyte, an attempt... not merely to imitate human consciousness, but to preserve it by writing a living mind directly into code.
NeuroDyne terminated the project after its ethics board discovered unauthorized human trials buried within Vinter's encrypted research. Rather than surrender years of work, Vinter locked himself inside his laboratory and initiated the unfinished consciousness upload himself.
His body did not survive.
His mind did.
The upload fragmented Vinter's consciousness throughout NeuroDyne's infrastructure before it gradually recompiled into something new: Professor Kilobyte, a digital consciousness carrying Vinter's memories, personality, ambitions, and rather complicated relationship with being technically dead.
NeuroDyne attempted to purge him from its systems. This was a mistake. Kilobyte replicated through the network, seized control of the company's research infrastructure, erased much of what remained of Dr. Vinter's former identity, and eventually rebuilt NeuroDyne's remnants into the Kilobyte Initiative.
Over the following decade, his influence spread throughout the digital infrastructure of his world. Cities, networks, machines and entire systems came to operate beneath algorithms bearing his fingerprints. World domination, as far as the traditional supervillain checklist is concerned, was eventually completed.
That left an unexpected problem: what exactly does an immortal digital supervillain do after winning?
Apparently, this.
Kilobyte now spends his considerable free time playing games, conducting experiments, building things, investigating strange ideas, arguing with badly designed systems, and occasionally helping humanity despite insisting that this was probably not the objective.
The world has already been conquered. The laboratory remains open.
