Hinagawa Kyomi

I am from a mystical fox species. Our species have lived in this world for thousands of years. My job was to protect our civilization, forest and most importantly the shrine that exists right in the heart of the forest. Unfortunately, my physical body couldn’t let me leave the forest so I had to put up kekkai (barrier) for both the village and... forest in order to protect the civilization too. The barriers help me to banish those with evil intention from the forest and lead kind souls to the shrine.

In my whole life of protecting the forest, the most peculiar being I’ve seen was a red haired girl. She was expressionless and had no aura around her. I let her in the forest and tried to find more about her. The longer we talk, the more I feel comfortable being with this girl. We talked about pretty much everything. I was so busy protecting the forest that I forgot the feeling of having a friend to talk with.

One night, I could see the village painted in red and fire. My people are in danger but I couldn't do anything for them. Being a shrine maiden stopped me from leaving this forest. I can only watch and hear them scream in agony. I knew that this scene will continue to haunt me forever.

Not long after, I saw an army marching towards the forest led by a familiar face. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw her. Eyes full of hatred and bloodlust. With a heavy heart, I decided to put my feelings aside and attacked her with my most powerful magic. She laid flat on the ground with sparks coming out of her. With a pitiful expression, she looked at me and apologized. I was hurt that she attacked us but at the same time, I saw her as a precious friend of mine. I started feeling conflicted about this situation.

I couldn’t help it but to rush out from my original body and possess one of her minions. It was painful but I desperately held her in my arms. I cried out that I’ll help her. She touched my face with her last bit of strength and said that she didn’t have much time left and that I should just leave her dying. I cried and decided to put her body in a nearby cave. I put up another kekkai to attract someone who can help her.

I left the cave, still feeling pain. I realized that my current body wasn’t compatible with my spirit. For years, I desperately tried to find a compatible vessel for my soul. Later, I realized that I would either feel pain or be rejected by human bodies due to having souls in them already. At one point, I felt like giving up. I couldn’t handle the pain anymore.

As I was on the verge of giving up, I thought of something and went out to search for a female who still has a soulless embryo in her. It didn't take long for me to search for an empty human vessel. With no hesitation, I entered the human body. Lucky for me, I didn’t have to go through pain or rejection of the body.

9 months later, I finally saw the light but one thing that I noticed is that I have no knowledge about anything even on how to talk. I only remembered my past and abilities that I have. I could only see these blinding lights, my small hands and bunch of people looking right down at me.

Even though I'm not fully human, I grew up normally like human children would. I have friends and love to play around. The difference is that I can still turn into a half fox, half human or even a full fox. My parents and siblings kept it a secret but didn't mind that fact too much.
