For as long as she could remember, she had wandered alone in the forest. Because her fur color was too striking, she had become an outcast among the raccoon clan and could only keep the fireflies of the woods as her companions. Whenever the night grew deep and still, she would curl up, wrapping herself tightly in her fluffy, bushy tail. As for how she had become an agent, Izayoi couldn’t quite recall. She only knew that only by filling her life with endless busyness could she drown out those extraneous, unsettled thoughts.

Her most recent assignment was at a maid café. She was forced to don cumbersome, foreign-style attire and, gritting her teeth, spent three whole months learning the art of smiling and proper etiquette. While on the job, she had to secretly carry out the “human observation mission” assigned by the organization, all while dealing with customers who would catch a glimpse of her ears and tail and exclaim, “How cute!” Ironically, because of her aloof demeanor and her soft, touchable tail, she ended up becoming the shop’s top maid and was nearly appointed as the next manager.

Every time a mission ended, she would habitually wrap her tail around herself. “When will this life ever end?” she muttered under her breath as she opened a new email: “Next Mission: Infiltrate VirtuaReal to conduct an ecological survey.” The attachment thoughtfully included profiles of members requiring special attention: an ordinary high school girl who loves jelly, a young girl with soft, cute rabbit ears, and a… person? who fell from the sky with a halo on her head.

从记事起，她就独自在森林里徘徊. 只因她的毛色太过惹眼，她成了浣熊族群里格格不入的异类，只能与林间的萤火虫为伴. 每当夜深人静，她便会蜷起身子，用毛茸茸的大尾巴紧紧裹住自己. 至于自己是如何成为一名特工的，十六萤其实记不太清了. 她只知道，唯有让无休止的忙碌填满生活，才能淹没那些多余的、无处安放的思绪.

最近一次任务是在一家女仆咖啡店. 她被迫换上行动不便的异乡服饰，硬着头皮学了整整三个月的微笑礼仪. 工作期间她既要隐秘地完成组织交代的 “人类观察任务”，又要应付那些瞥见她耳朵和尾巴就惊呼 “好可爱” 的顾客. 结果偏偏因为气质太过清冷、尾巴又软又好摸，反倒成了店里的头牌女仆，差点被任命为下一任店长.

每次任务结束，她还会习惯性地用尾巴圈住自己. 这种日子，到底什么时候才是个头？她一边低声嘀咕，一边点开新收到的邮件 ——“下一任务：潜入 VirtuaReal 进行生态调查”. 附件里还贴心地附上了需要重点关注的成员资料：有爱吃果冻的平凡女高中生，有长着软萌兔耳的少女，还有从天而降、头顶光环的…… 人？

十六萤依旧面无表情地接下了任务，只是心底莫名闪过一个念头：这一次的任务…… 说不定，没那么难熬？
