Background
Before becoming "Rye" in 2021, she spent around a year creating YouTube shitposts and meme videos for herself and friends. She was inspired to take content creation more seriously when some of her videos received around 200 views, and was inspired by a certain hololive member to become a VTuber herself. Her pre-debut streams had as few as 1 viewer, and she was too shy even to talk in GTA collabs.
After joining a Discord server themed around anime and the game Escape from Tarkov, she found art piece called "Tarkov Loli" by @hamsterCrumbs, which inspired her to create a VTuber character based on Tarkov and military themes. She created her own original character based on a Tarkov "scav," which caught the attention of @JiziIzum, VTuber model artist for other tactical VTubers. Rye had a model for her original VTuber character, "Rye the Breb," drawn by Jizi and rigged by @hamsterCrumbs.
Rye's Twitch channel was created on 19 Mar 2021, originally as "rye_project". Her YouTube channel was created on 26 March 2021, originally as "Rye Project Ch." Her original Twitter account, @RyeProject, was created in the same month.

Her reasons for doing so include losing the files for the original model, and a desire to appeal to a broader audience. Between 23 May and 2 June, Rye reached 10,000 Twitch followers, receiving a sudden spike in viewers.
