It is currently believed that Rie is the conscious of a single human female from a town that her host had previously devoured. Unwilling to be suppressed, this conscious inhabited a sub body. Due to the stress of being devoured and the conditions of her rebirth, Rie has no memories of her origin. Although her memories are gone, Rie does know that she was at some point, a human.
