Early life
Gwen was born as an Arachne, a race that was historically feared by humans. Through years of magical practice, she learned how to transform herself into a completely human form, allowing her to live within human society without revealing her true nature.
She eventually established a successful café and cleaning service, assisted by her numerous spider children. To the humans around her, Gwen introduced her children as her familiars, allowing them to work alongside her without raising suspicion.
Although most of Gwen's children were spiders of varying sizes and appearances, many Arachne possess a natural aptitude for transformation magic because of their partly human nature. Gwen eventually began teaching this magic to her children as well.
Becoming a Baroness
Gwen's life changed when one of her larger and more monstrous children accidentally wandered into a nearby town while the Crown Prince was visiting the region.
The prince and his guards attacked the spider, believing her to be a dangerous monster. The confrontation escalated until the creature was nearly driven into a corner.
Gwen arrived and intervened. However, because she needed to preserve her identity as a human, she made the painful decision to kill her own daughter in front of the prince. She then presented herself as the person who had saved him from the monster.
The Crown Prince survived, and Gwen's actions earned her the gratitude of the royal family. As a reward, she was granted an audience with the king.
The king subsequently granted Gwen the title of Baroness and placed her in charge of a small province on the outskirts of the kingdom, establishing her as a noble of House Talarian.
Settlement of Talarian
Gwen moved her children to her new territory and began teaching them transformation magic so that those capable of taking human form could live openly among the human population.
Her smaller spiders, particularly those incapable of assuming humanoid forms, became the settlement's cleaning and surveillance network. The larger, non-humanoid spiders instead became its guards.
The presence of giant spiders initially caused considerable concern among human authorities and neighboring noble houses. Gwen eventually explained the true nature of her people and demonstrated that her children could coexist peacefully with humans.
Her existing reputation and contributions to the kingdom gradually helped ease these concerns. As relations between the Arachne and humans improved, transformation magic became less of a necessity for Gwen's people, as they were increasingly accepted in their natural forms.
House Talarian
Gwen's appointment as Baroness was not universally welcomed.
House Talarian is one of six competing noble houses in the kingdom. When the king allowed Gwen, an Arachne, to become a baroness of House Talarian, the other noble houses initially viewed her appointment with skepticism.
Three of the five other houses openly called for the extermination of Gwen and her people, reflecting the longstanding fear and distrust surrounding the Arachne.
Rather than responding through military force, Gwen sought to win the support of the kingdom's common people.
The Web Way
To improve relations between the Arachne and other races, Gwen used her racial abilities and magical knowledge to create the Web Way, a vast, many-stranded network of magical webs capable of transmitting images and sound across great distances.
The Web Way allowed Gwen to effectively "stream" entertainment produced by herself and her children. Their productions ranged from games and dramas to theatrical performances and music.
Gwen combined her intelligence with the talents of her children to expand the Web Way throughout the regions she visited. The network became both a means of communication and a form of entertainment, helping Gwen gain favor among ordinary people.
Through her travels and the expansion of the Web Way, Gwen also formed friendships with members of numerous races. Her acquaintances reportedly include a goblin, a fawn, and even a nun from a distant city.
Over time, the Web Way became an important part of Gwen's efforts to demonstrate that the Arachne were capable of living alongside other races.
2026
On 19 June, Gwen officially debuted her 3D model.
