The announcement of a new insect-themed VTuber was teased on the VShojo Twitter account beginning on 8 October, with a series of live-action black and white news reports, a brief animation titled "Something Wicked This Way Comes," and a B-movie style poster for "Attack of the Cockroach Woman."
On 12 October, her name was announced, along with a debut date. Her Twitch channel already had partner status by this date, and reached 5,000 followers within around four hours of the announcement. Prior to debut, she released some short teaser videos on her YouTube channel. She was so nervous the night before the debut that she slept for only two hours.
Debut
She debuted on Twitch on 15 October 2023 at 3:30PM PT or 6:30PM ET. She reached over 25,000 followers and over 1,000 subscriber points by the start of the debut stream, which at peak was attended by 44,578 viewers. By stream end, she reached over 42,000 followers and over 3,600 sub points.

- When her homeworld was crushed in an instant by an ancient space god, she escaped on a spaceship and travelled through space for a long time, asleep in a cocoon. She was accepted by a peaceful alien planet, but her presence drew the attention of space monsters and she left to protect them.
- She arrived on Earth, where she was researched by scientists who discovered her invulnerable. She escaped and accidentally robbed a gas station, since her home culture had no concept of money. This attracted the attention of Ironmouse, who became her first friend on Earth.

Name
- The name Matara Kan appears to derive from mata, which means "mother" in numerous world languages; and the Russian тарака́н, "tarakа́n," meaning "cockroach."
- As Matara herself explains, her "alien" name is "Mat'tarakan". The apostrophe is occasionally used by Russians when transliterating Russian words into English to signify the presence of a soft sign, or "ь". In this case, "Mat'tarakan" is a transliteration of "мать таракан", which means "mother cockroach" in Russian.
- Early on, other VShojo members including Kuro and Melody referred to her by the nickname Tara. She tends to refer to herself as Mata.
