Noraneko, the pseudonymous talent behind Nora Cat, originated on Japanese video site Niconico. Prior to debuting as a VTuber, their first livestream took place on 22 October 2012. They would continue to make various livestreams between then and 2017.
The character or Nora Cat was an original concept that Noraneko dreamed up in middle school. Originally, she was a demon girl.

2017
On 14 April, they made a livestream titled "Old man practicing being a beautiful girl."
On 15 April 2017, Nora Cat's Niconico community co3600926 was created. Their first stream took place that day, titled "From today, a beautiful girl makes your acquaintance." A stream VOD was posted the following day, titled "The time has come for anyone to become a beautiful girl! (MMC+Yukari.net)". The stream used MikuMikuCapture for motion capture, and Voiceroid for real-time voice synthesis.
On 23 December, Nora Cat posted her first YouTube video, titled "Starting from zero! I'm Virtual YouTuber Nora Cat!" This original stream demonstrated real-time voice synthesis (although its accuracy was unreliable), and a 3D motion captured model built from various readily-available components. The total budget was 30,000 yen.
On 28 December, Nora Cat made her last stream on Niconico. Further livestreams would take place on YouTube going forward.
On 29 December, Nora Cat began an investigation to check whether she had the rights to use her model. Use of the model was temporarily suspended on 30 December while rights were confirmed, and returned on 31 December.
2018
Around 4 January, Nora Cat reached 10,000 YouTube subscribers.

Face reveal incident
On 4 February at 15:19 JST, Nora Cat started a YouTube livestream titled "午後ののんびり のらきゃっと雑談＆ゲーム" (Lazy afternoon Nora Cat chatting and gameplay), in which she appears to have been testing a new Live2D model. Contemporary clips suggest that Nora Cat was having difficulty with the model tracking, marking her avatar with a note that said "not moving."
At around 8 minutes into the stream, the stream unexpectedly began displaying the live webcam video of the talent behind Nora Cat, showing them to be a man. Chat immediately reacted with such phrases as "lol" and "forgetty beam!" It is generally assumed that the incident was the result of human error, due to the creator clicking the wrong button in the FaceRig software. After fixing the issue, the stream continued to 31:29 and ended at 15:52 JST. The stream recording was set to unlisted.
By 15:32, within five minutes of the incident occurring, it was being discussed on forums by Japanese users. At 16:39, Twitter user karakasa893 posted a clip to Twitter, which received over 7,000 retweets. From here, it would subsequently be covered in English-language media.
Undeterred, he streamed twice more later that day: once at around 17:13, and another at 20:21, which ran until 22:30. Both streams were titled "Lazy afternoon going on evening Nora Cat chatting and gameplay."
Just after midnight, the talent behind Nora established a Twitter account for himself, as distinct from the character. He began by issuing an apology, saying, "The words I've received have been nothing but kind, but to be frank, it doesn't change the fact that I've undermined my own charm as a character."
Nevertheless, he resolved to continue streaming as Nora Cat. Nora Cat continued to use the 2D model, and was able to get it to work in later streams. However, the channel's YouTube subscriber count, which had grown by around 50,000 since the start of the year, slowed considerably after this point.
In 2020, a video described that Nora Cat as a fictional being, and as an android who technically has no gender. While the video acknowledged the "author" of this fiction is male, Nora Cat compared it to TTRPG characters or story characters, where the author's gender or identity may differ from the characters they create.
The 2021 video game KUUKIYOMI 3 featured a scene seemingly inspired by this event.
Continuation
On 30 March, the original 3D model was withdrawn from use. Due to rights issues, videos using the original model were removed.
On 31 March, Nora Cat debuted a new custom 3D model, by Riley. The new model's 3D set up uses Unity, and is compatible with VRChat.
On 6 May, the Nora Cat Classics channel was created to host videos of the original 3D model.
On 17 June, the model by Riley was withdrawn from use.
On 22 July, Nora Cat debuted her third 3D model, custom made by Nagatoro Koyori. This model would be used going forward.
On 17 August, Nora Cat joined the agency upd8.
On 18 September, videos using the original 3D model were uploaded to the Nora Cat Classics channel.
2019
On 5 February she launched the Nora Cat merch store.
2020
On 5 September, Nora Cat posted a video responding to a wave of foreign users who had recently learned Nora Cat's real-life identity.
On 1 November, upd8 announced that it would end its activities on 31 December 2020. Nora Cat would continue as an independent streamer. In a stream, she expressed gratitude for the opportunities that the group had provided.
2024
On 9 September, Nora Cat took part in a collaboration titled "[Magnificent] Legend VTuber Grand Gathering," featuring Virtual Noja Loli Kitsunemusume Youtuber Ojisan, Baacharu, and Irodori Mayoi.
2025
On 27 February, she had a collab with Kotohara Hinari.
