Shien is a jackal that sometimes can be quite dumb and naive, baby-like, even. Former TriNero member Tsukishita Kaoru described him as a man that misuses his handsome voice, and "if a bat maker gave him the world's best baseball bat, he'd use it for soccer". Additionally, Aragami Oga, another member of TriNero, states that despite him being a mafia boss, he can't do anything without his subordinates. He further states that despite having good ears, he doesn't seem to listen to anyone.

Appearance

He has short two-toned black and white hair with pointed ears and golden eyes. He wears a mostly black outfit with purple trim and a white tie.

His Twitter account was created in 10 April 2020; he made his first tweet on 27 April, his YouTube channel was created on 8 April, and his debut stream was performed on 30 April.

Mascot and fans

Shien's mascot is a cat named "Nekoyama Shien" (猫山シエン), which was drawn by Aragami Oga.
Shien also has two minions, "Koyama" (小山) and "Nakayama" (中山).
His fanbase is officially called "Shiengumi" (シエン組), although he usually calls his fans his "subordinates" (部下たち).
After Shien says his opening greeting (お前たち，任務開始だ！), fans reply with "yes boss!" (イエスボス！).
When Shien ends the stream, fans say farewell by saying "good luck!" (グッドラック！).

He confirmed having two younger brothers and helped his mom watch them grow up since they were babies.
In the process of creating TriNero's Twitter accounts, they were cautioned seriously by Daidou Shinove, HOLOSTARS' manager, and mentioned that they had to be careful with the birthday settings, as your account would get locked if you were underage. Aragami Oga joked that because they debut in 2020, that would also be their birth year, which may have caused Shien to set 2020 as his birth year, thus causing his Twitter suspension.
Shien's Twitter suspension has caused jokes between fans, saying that he was baby, as if he was born in 2020. Notable examples of the joke was when Shirakami Fubuki drew Shien as a baby, Aragami Oga displaying Shien with a pacifier in his mouth, as well as calling him a "babbling baby" in his debut stream, and Tsukishita Kaoru making Shien's drink a baby bottle in the first TriNero collab.
Along with that, because his Twitter was suspended, he couldn't set up his official fan mark, but the official HOLOSTARS Twitter confirmed that "🟣", a purple circle, was his fan mark, shown in schedules. However, fans used "🍼", a baby bottle, as an unofficial fan mark as part of the joke.
Ironically, he is lactose intolerant.
Fans have stated how Shien's voice is very similar to that of voice actor Takahiro Sakurai's. Shien has even done some impressions of characters Sakurai has voiced, for example, Lucio from Granblue Fantasy.
His fetish is asses without thigh gaps, as when the legs are closed, it jiggles due to the "fleshiness".
One of Shien's running gags is him using an echo filter on his mic, often at abrupt times.
He shares the same character designer with Shirayuki Tomoe from NIJISANJI, Hex Haywire from NIJISANJI EN, Zander Netherbrand from FIRST STAGE PRODUCTION EN, Mihako Tarta from Nextopia and Heart no Myu from TRILLIONSTAGE.
Because of this, he calls Tomoe "Ane-san" (姐さん).
He owns a toy sword called DX Kageyama Blade (DX影山刀) that comes with various voice lines, voiced by himself. Some of the voice lines include his stream greeting and ending lines as well as original special attack names.
Sometimes new viewers mistake him as a dog, cat or even a skunk.
During his birthday stream, he revealed that when he hit around 20 years old, he went drinking without knowing his alcohol tolerance. He merrily went to an izakaya, had six cocktails of Kahlua Milk and vomitted so much he puked blood soon after, causing the realization that he can't drink, only able to do so moderately.
In Shien's one year anniversary stream, he mentioned that within just one year they lost 3 out of 12 HOLOSTARS members. Even though it's just currently the 9 of them, they're all working very hard. Further stating that from time to time, he'll see comments asking for a 4th generation already and understanding that people are hyped for new things. However, Shien noted that they aren't some gacha pulls but real people with feelings. To be clear, he is not against new members but ask that everyone support the current 9 members that are here now.
Rikka had also stopped by the stream and commented that in their hearts they are always 12 members and Shien agreed cementing the statement to be true as they'll never forget.
In a Minecraft stream while talking to viewers, Miyabi revealed that Shien doesn't act any different indicating his personality is the same whether when streaming or not streaming.
Shien said in a stream that during an off collab where everyone met and went out to eat, they were having serious talks regarding how HOLOSTARS would be moving forward in the future. Izuru, who was seating near him and after hearing Izuru's heartful response, it moved him so he ended up giving Izuru a head pat.
Shien brought it up again in a different stream collab with Izuru where he noted for having gave Izuru head pats because he couldn't help himself since Izuru was so cute in his response.
Shien had revealed for the 1st time that while not fluent, he is able to speak and read Korean. He has notated that if Korean is being typed in chat, he is usually aware of what is being said.
Fans were aware before that Shien probably knew some Korean as he was able to pronounce names when thanking for superchats. In the beginning it was only a speculation but now proven true directly from Shien.
Shien narrated the promotion video for the third volume of the light novel, "Kuro Shiro no Yuusha" (黒白の勇者) written by Junki Hiyama and illustrated by Eito Shimotsuki.

2020

Shortly after his debut, his Twitter account was suspended because of his birth year being set to 2020. On 2 June, the Twitter suspension was lifted.

On 16 August, he released a cover of Fire◎Flower by halyosy, in which he sang with Rikka, Kanade Izuru and Astel Leda, making it his first cover song.

On 27 September, he released his first solo cover song, KING by Kanaria.

On 25 December, it was announced that all the HOLOSTARS members would receive new costumes on 3 January, 2021, commemorating New Year's.

2021

On 3 January, he revealed his new year's costume, which was modelled by Klaeia.

On 9 January, he opened his membership feature.

On 20 March, Shien reached 100,000 subscribers, being the third HOLOSTARS member to reach this milestone.

On 7 July, Shien announced during a stream that he would receive his 3D model.

On 10 July, Shien debuted his 3D model.

On 13 July, hololive's Japanese Twitter account announced that every HOLOSTARS member would get 2.0 version of their 2D model.

On 6 August, hololive's Japanese Twitter announced that Shien and Oga would receive "Summer" costumes.

2022

On 21 July, Shien reached 200,000 subscribers, being the fourth HOLOSTARS member to reach this milestone.

On 30 August, HOLOSTARS revealed an original voice drama titled, "Highschool Holography" to include all of the nine HOLOSTARS members along with featuring all four UPROAR!! members as guests. The drama cd will be released into two parts with the first part to release on November 5, 2022 and the second part to be announced at a later date.

On 21 September, it was announced that in celebration of the upcoming HOLOSTARS 2nd ACT 3D live concert, 3 new original unit songs would be released.

On 30 November, he revealed his 2D autumn/winter costume which was designed by his original illustrator Namakawa and rigged by Naname.

2023

On 24 January, Polaporiposupo, Bandai Namco's new mixed voiced media project had begun revealing voice actors with Rikka and Kageyama Shien being a part of the lineup for the roles of the characters. Rikka will be voicing the character SO from the group WAKAZO and Shien will be voicing the character Itsuki from the group chirpxchirp.

2024

On 14 March, during white valentine's day, Shien debuted his sixth 2D costume.

2025

On 16 March, Shien debuted his seventh 2D costume.
