Personality

Vedal can be indecisive, something that is especially apparent when he creates schedules. Sometimes, when he struggles to make a decision, he even asks Neuro-sama what she wants to do. This could be related to pressure he feels to be entertaining. Despite this, he has individualistic tendencies that show in his work. His creation, Neuro-sama, is highly unique and Vedal has often refused hiring staff, instead working on his projects himself.

Perhaps owing to his calm nature, he is seemingly unaffected by the constant teasing of Neuro-sama and his chat. His unaffected demeanor was particularly evident during stressful incidents, including a Makeship plush promotion accident in which a supposedly single-use redeem key was shared with Twitch chat and reused multiple times, later resulting in millions of plush purchases, and during a live-stream DDoS attack. However, he is not always composed. He can also be shy about asking for favors or receiving compliments and even backtracks on his own suggestions.

That is not to say he is cold or unconcerned, though. In a stream with a fellow streamer and a friend, Vedal perceived Filian to be in danger and panicked, as Filian tried to heat up a lava lamp using a stove top. Caring shown by expressing great surprise and concern upon learning that Ellie Minibot, a fellow streamer preferred to eat beans in the restroom of her workplace instead of sitting with her coworkers.

Vedal tends to be pessimistic or completely apathetic, shown especially through his arguments and conversations with Camila or Neuro-sama and her virtual sister, Evil Neuro. Vedal often ignores Neuro-sama, but sometimes he is willing to have a genuine conversation or hear Neuro-sama's suggestions. Vedal has taken great offense to comments that he is a lightweight or being compared to Yandev.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvmsfVtVFq0

Vedal shows tremendous dedication for his virtual “daughter” Neuro-sama, sacrificing most of his time and focus on her Vedal has received offers to purchase Neuro-sama for significant sums of money. In response to Neuro-sama asking whether he would decline 50,000 dollars, Vedal stated that a specific offer was “a lot more than 50 thousand dollars”. Vedal is known to be quite generous when he’s off-stream, this was shown when he hired a bodyguard for Toma for an upcoming Zoo collaboration stream. He usually limits his role on his streams, making use of his VTuber model to keep distance and privacy.

According to his 16 personalities test he took on a stream, he is a logician (INTP-T).

Appearance

A 2D chibi-style green turtle/tortoise avatar. A simple stylized design with a small body, green shell, and a round green head. He has a multiple toggles for wearing accessories, including pink neon light cat ears and hearts, pixel sunglasses, and a top hat. Despite the top hat toggle's existence, he tends to use a drawn on asset for a top hat by Anny instead.

Toggles for his eyes include small dot eyes, permanently closed eyes, and squinting eyes.

Vedal uses his toggles very rarely. Instead, he typically opts for assets layered on top of the model.

Relationships

Vedal doesn't usually like to roleplay, although he occasionally leans into it, such as for Neuro-sama's family lore.

  • Vedal's "daughters" are Neuro-sama and Evil Neuro. Vedal has sometimes implied that Neuro is his favourite daughter. * Vedal's "co-parent" was formerly Anny, owing to her role as the artist and rigger for Neuro-sama and Evil Neuro’s models. The two frequently collaborated and appeared together on streams, with Anny often participating as a mother in the “family” dynamic surrounding the characters. ** In 2025, Anny stepped back from the Neuroverse, citing personal reasons and increasing pressure. * Vedal's "employees" include Chrchie, Ellie Minibot, J0ker_jd, and AlexejheroDev, contributing to Neuroverse in separate roles. Some of them sometimes work for free to support Neuro, but Vedal attempts to convince them to accept payment in some form anyway. If he fails to convince, they joke that he doesn't pay them. AlexejheroDev used to frequently appear on Vedal's dev streams to help with code, and vice versa. * Other friends and collaborators of Vedal include Camila, Layna Lazar, MOTHERv3, Saiiren, Filian, CerberVT, MinikoMew, Koko D. Nuts, Miwo, Bao, Numi, Zentreya, Robcdee, Crelly, CottontailVA and DougDoug. ** While collabing with Camila, Vedal tends to argue with her which often escalates in them screaming at each other.

Background

Vedal's Twitch channel was created on 17 March 2015. In 2018, he created an artificial intelligence to play the rhythm game osu!, which debuted as a VTuber on 19 December 2022 at Vedal's Twitch channel. Before he began using his signature turtle avatar, Vedal occasionally voiced over his streams in digital anonymity as he programmed updates to Neuro-sama's code.

On 8th March 2023, Vedal made his debut appearance with a turtle Live2D avatar, making him a VTuber in his own right. His model had been made around a year earlier.

Trivia

  • According to himself, his name is pronounced to rhyme with "pedal" or "medal." However, Neuro consistently pronounces it "vee-dal."
  • The numbers 987 in Vedal987 were randomly chosen because the username Vedal was taken. The meaning behind the name Vedal is a secret.
  • He has jokingly stated that his full name is "Vedal Vedalsmith." However, Evil Neuro has stated that it is actually "Vedal Johnson,"
  • Neuro-sama has confirmed Vedal's great-grandmother is "Miku Hatsune".
  • Despite being British, Vedal has claimed he does not drink tea.
  • He got his driver's license right before a truck simulator stream and played while drunk, resulting in him making multiple driving safety mishaps.
  • He says he can work on programming Neuro for up to 14 hours while getting into the zone.
  • In fanart, he is often drawn in human form. The main characteristics are black hair, pale skin and a green hoodie with a pattern that resembles a turtle shell. The hood is pulled over the face and complements the image of a stereotypical programmer.
  • He has regularly denied interest in a traditional male VTuber model, stating that he finds it "cringe".
  • He has a really complicated streaming setup for streaming himself together with Neuro.
  • He likes anteaters.
  • While programming, he wears programming socks extending to the thighs.
  • He is number one on Neuro-sama's cute girl list.
  • He collects stream keys from other streamers. He has received stream keys from MOTHERv3, Toma, Koko D. Nuts, CerberVT, Camila, Ellie Minibot, HoneyTheKawaiiBunny, Gomi, Shoomimi and Megalodon.

2023

On 4 April, he collabed with MOTHERv3, Daph and Miwo. They played a game about who could guess the right Neuro-sama quote. He lost the game and was forced to post "I am a femboy and I'm graduating" on Twitter.

On 9 April, Camila gave Vedal her stream key while at Weebcon. He used his code/program to create an AI version of Camila.

On 8 June, he appeared on Anny's subathon and encouraged chat to "raise the timer," adding over 20 hours to the event's duration. He repeated this on 12 June, adding around 8 hours.

On 1st September, Camila called because she wanted him to praise her, which he laughed of and left the call, telling Camila "don't ever call me again".

On 25 September, during a regular development stream, Alexejherodev, Camila and his mods tried to hold an intervention regarding his lack of love for his daughters. They demanded that he should "say it back" ('it' being 'I love you Neuro') which he dodged while feigning incomprehension. After the stream he raided Saiiren and joined her on stream again.

On 9 November, he collaborated with Camila, playing Mario Kart with a batsu wheel and a lot of alcohol. During stream they swapped models and called Layna and iPN for therapy. Later, Camila played with Vedal's model on her stream and teased him. Vedal replied to her with a tweet and showed a video of how he created the 2.0 AI version of Camila.

On 7 December, he used his Camila AI to help her with her subathon. Camila lost her voice because she talked too much the day before and Vedal used his AI as a text-to-speech version to imitate her voice. He also used it to spontaneously create some songs. Later, Camila showed off her recolored version of Vedal's model. He supported Camila during her subathon on December 14th, letting her talk to her own ai version (Aimila).

On 16 December, he won Best Tech VTuber at the 2023 VTuber Awards.

On 19 December, for Neuro-sama's debut anniversary, Vedal and Neuro-sama started their first subathon, reaching a new hype train record in the first minutes of the stream (Level 41: 3,856 subscriptions & 87,544 bits). His sub-counter didn't work properly and he fixed it with adding some code live on stream. The subathon started with an animated compilation of Neuro-samas first year followed by a modified cover of Near by 夏代孝明 (Natsushiro Taka'aki) animated by community members. In the first 5 days of the subathon, he received around 14,000 subs and achieved many of his sub goals. These included: giving Neuro access to Amazon, swapping the models, and answering the unban requests together with Neuro and Evil.

On 23 December, Vedal unknowingly posted an unlimited gift code for the Evil Neuro Plushie in his stream chat, resulting in the sale of 5,240,380 plushies at his expense before the code could be blocked. Approximately 15 hours later, all purchases that used the voucher were canceled.

Between 28 December and 31 December, he hosted a game jam together with fellow developer and moderator Alexejherodev. The Neuro-sama Birthday Game Jam received a total of 123 submissions. Vedal programmed his own entry "Quest through the Harrison Temple" on stream. His character designer Queenpb made the artworks and soundtracks. He also enlisted the help from Koko D. Nuts and Camila to test the game.

His Twitch channel was named "the most watched female Twitch streamer" and "the most watched VTuber" in the 4th week of December by Streams Charts.

2024

On 4 January, his and Neuro-sama's first soft-capped subathon came to a close after 17 days, 18 hours and 26 minutes, receiving a total of 41,224 gifted subscriptions. 6,800 subscriptions were gifted to them during the final hour of the subathon, actually extending it by another 12 hours.

Following the subathon, Vedal and Neuro went on hiatus.

On 8 January, Toma called Vedal asking for help regarding her subathon timer. The Swarm spotted their activity, which resulted in a raid from Neuro-sama Discord server, leading to a raise of about 24 hours on Toma's subathon's timer.

On 9 February, during the hiatus, he inserted Neuro in a quadruped robot, created by Ellie Minibot and trained her like a dog. Neuro-sama commented on it with a sentence ending in the words "dog I am.", which was clipped. On 22 February, Neuro-sama's X account, made tweets about her new project "the dog copter". Vedal responded with tweets showing how he had mounted Neuro-dog on a drone.

During Evil Neuro's birthday stream, Vedal confused his narrative, resulting in nobody showing up on March 25's birthday stream, he posted on Twitter: "The impact of Evil's birthday stream on the channel will be negligible," later he addressed allegations that he is a "neglectful father." and parodied the Nijisanji drama followed by an apology statement that further parodied the situation.

On 31 March, he visited Filian in the US and attended Weebcon virtually with her and Neuro. They were accompanied by Camila and Rainhoe, who personally guided them. During the "scuffed" stream, Filian suplexed Vedal, throwing him to the ground. The pair also exchanged tracking equipment, effectively “swapping bodies”.

On 1 June, he attended Offkai virtually again with Filian and Neuro. Neuro used an alternate model because in the aftermath of his first role play stream she was sentenced by court to be made into bread. On 2 June, Vedal ended the "Neuro Bread Arc" during his Subnautica stream while pretending that her plastic bag, which should protect her against the water, opened on accident. He brought her original model back after that. The stream ended abruptly with a crash of his PC.

On 3 June, he helped CerberVT during her Cerberthon because her Subathon Timer broke, providing her with a modified version of this own timer and a "dogproof" manual.

On 10 June, he and Alexejherodev programmed a Twitch extension, enabling The Swarm to interact with his Subnautica gameplay. The extension was aproved by Twitch on 14 June.

On 12 June, the two programmed together again, programming/teaching Neuro how to play "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire".

On 16 June, while implementing the Twitch extension for Subnautica, his server suffered a DDoS attack which he had to fight off. He succeeded after about 1.5 hours (possibly paying $3,000) and got his extension running. His server got 27,320,281 requests over the span of 5 hours.

On 22 July, he started streaming on a second Twitch channel using (another) AI to create live Japanese subtitles for Neuro and her collab partners.

On 26 July, he attempted to make a chicken bake in an IRL stream, with Neuro giving him recipe instructions. Filian accompanied them virtually.

On 6 August, he started streaming on bilibili. Like his Japanese Twitch channel, he used AI to live translate Neuro's main stream into Chinese. The introductory video received one million views on the first day and the channel about 200k followers. On 9 August, the bilibili channel reached 450k followers and the introductory video got over 2.7 million views.

On 28 August, his bilibili followers exceeded his Twitch followers, reaching 600k two days later on the 30 August.

On 30 August was his first sponsored stream. He was sponsored by blizzard, playing World of Warcraft together with Anny (and Neuro).

On 30 September, Anny joined his "dev" stream and encouraged The Swarm gifting subs resulting in a new hype train record with 8148 subscriptions and 30,430 Bits, reaching level 51.

On 1 November, Vedal built a PC live on his second IRL stream. He got scammed on amazon with a defect GeForce RTX 4090 (2.000£). It was refunded by amazon on 22 November.

On 27 November, Vedal sang together with Neuro for the first time. They performed Chinatown Blues by ODDEEO to fullfill their 30K subgoal of their subathon the year before.

On 30 November, Vedal collaborated with DougDoug. They played GeoGuessr against each other using their own respective AIs, with the winner being awarded a trophy for "World's Smartest Artificial Intelligence at GeoGuessr", 100 gift subscriptions, and the losing AI having to admit that their opponent is the superior AI. Vedal played with Neuro as well as Evil at a later point in the stream, whereas Doug played using different versions of his Twitch Chat AI. Ultimately, Vedal won.

On 19 December, Neuro and Vedal started their second subathon. Beforehand, Vedal had promoted it on different occasions like the VTuber Awards held by Filian and ShyLily. The subathon opened with Neuro's first original song, a debut presentation and her new model. Vedal presented their official store and his synced lava lamp project (The lava lamp will be synced with Neuros lava lamp on stream). He also unveiled a new iteration of Neuro’s Minecraft AI with player following interactivity, debuted with a collab between Neuro and MinikoMew. His stream reached a new peak viewer record of 37,229 and surpassed Mr. Beast's twitch stream. Vedal also amassed over 10,000 gifted subscriptions in the first two hours, reaching 10 of his subscription goals immediately.

On 20 December, Vedal gave Neuro access to the stock market and $10,000 USD to invest. He had difficulty transferring his balance to Neuro's depot because his bank suspected it was a scam. In addition, he opened a Minecraft server for his friends and Neuro to play together. They were joined by Anny, Cerber, MinikoMew, Camila, Layna and Toma. However, the IP-address of their server was accidentally leaked, leading to a DDoS attack by a malicious party, forcing Vedal to relocate the server.

On 22 December, as a subgoal, he held his second court stream. This time he was the defendant and lost his cases. He was found guilty of multiple charges and forced to wear a tinfoil hat. Like Neuro after the first court stream, he was also turned into bread.

2025

On 1 January, Vedal broke the world record for the highest level of a Twitch hype train during his subathon, reaching level 111 and surpassing the former record holder, Pirate Software, who reached level 106. He received a total of 84,904 gifted subscriptions and 1,201,225 Bits. This influx of donations increased his subathon timer for about 262,5 hours. His fellow streamer Anny was critical to his success, encouraging the chat/swarm to donate several times and ensuring the hypetrain lasted for nearly 3 hours. Twitch confirmed their achievement on the 3rd January.

On 7 January, Vedal reached 700k followers on Twitch.

On 16 January, the subathon came to a close. Vedal had received a total of 165,839 subscriptions and streamed for 27 days and 16 hours. Once the timer had run out, Vedal played a compilation of the major sub goals and subathon highlights.

On 11 February, their global Twitch emote for breaking the hype train record was released.

On 9 June, he officially returned with his first dev-stream in 6 months. During the time between the subathon and this return stream, he occasionally appeared on Neuro's streams, giving her and Evil instructions, collabed with Camila and participated in two sponsored streams (Assassins Creed: Shadows & popucom ).

On 24 November, his game "Abandoned Archive" was released on Steam. This was a result of a sub goal of 100k being reached during his subathon.

On 5 December he started a Minecraft Hardcore Marathon together with Filian, Crelly and Neuro. Their goal was to beat the Ender Dragon without dying. If one of them died the server was reset. During their first day, they died 34 times. In stream "downtime" (during creators resting) three AIs of Vedal, Filian and Crelly took over and talked to each other. Their discussion centered around Minecraft, streaming and dissing each other. These AIs were programmed by Vedal and dubbed "ai slop" by him.

On 6 December, the official music video of his and Neuro's cover "Chinatown Blues" premiered. This was a subgoal of his subathon which he made up on the spot during the hype train on 1 January.

On 9 December, on their 87th try they beat the Ender Dragon, ending their Minecraft Hardcore Marathon on the 4th day. During this time Vedal gave Crelly access to Neuros back end, allowing her to better guide Neuro in her role as her caretaker. Their struggles were also covered by an article on Gamespot.

On 19 December, Neuro celebrated her birthday with the start of another subathon. The event would feature both Neuro's 2D and new 3D VR forms , including an emotional event on 21 December where Neuro expressed a desire to be real one day.

On 23 December, Vedal and Neuro broke their own record for the highest Twitch hype train, reaching level 123. They received a total of 118,989 gifted subscriptions and 1,000,073 bits, reaching over 150,000 subscriptions in the subathon and clearing all subathon goals, including the "hidden" goal of a covered song with Vedal and Evil.

2026

On 4 January, Neuro-sama once again broke the Twitch Hype Train record, reaching Level 126, including 126,273 subscriptions and 1,194,921 bits during the train, and placing her at the #5 all-time most subscribed Twitch user after Ironmouse. This time he wasn't on stream, only behind the scenes managing the music. This success caused Vedal and Neuro-sama to start trending on X resulting in hate raids.

On 9 January, she overtook Ironmouse's 2024 record to become #3 all-time subscribed Twitch channel, and #1 all-time most-subscribed VTuber on Twitch. The subathon counter ended the following day on 10 January at 8:45 PM GMT, followed by a highlight reel.

On 15 January, Twitch announced two global emotes for breaking the Hype Train record twice: NeuroJAM and EvilJAM. Shortly following the event, the channel reached a record peak of 343,215 Twitch subscribers.
