Personality

Despite his stoic appearance, deep voice, and backstory, Akira warned viewers as early as his debut stream that he was going to destroy the cool image they had of him. As such, Akira in reality has a more laid back and silly demeanor by his own admission, though he can also get very fired up and animated during competitive games and when talking about his interests (e.g., ). He specializes in chatting and radio streams, and is a natural conversationalist.

He has been described by others as being surprisingly childish, and has a bit of a more openly perverted and yabai side to him, even by NIJISANJI standards. Despite this, Akira is ultimately a mature and thoughtful person who is known to give good advice; in part because of his varied life experiences, he has an open-minded outlook on many issues, such as sexuality and gender expression. Though often just as wacky as the rest of them, he tends to be the sole voice of reason among the colorful cast of characters that make up VOLTACTION, and ends up having to keep the others in line at times - even if he winds up being the recipient of friendly mockery for it.

He is also quite sensitive and can get very moody and pensive, especially in the early morning hours, with this side of him being referred to as 3AM Shikinagi Akira (深夜3時の四季凪アキラ); he has even advised people not to talk to him when he's in this state as if his 3AM self were a separate entity. He is the type of person to get lonely easily, and it has been stated that he sometimes lingers in voice chat until late at night hoping someone will join him.

Appearance

Akira has short black hair with slightly long asymmetric bangs, longer on the right than the left. He has eyes that are a magenta-purple-blue gradient color, framed by black glasses. His right ear has two piercings, a silver cuff and a black stud. He has a characteristic pair of moles on the right side of his neck. In his default appearance, he has a blue overcoat with black accents and ivory lining that he wears as a cape and an ivory stole fastened with a gold stole pin. Under these, he wears a navy blue vest, a black waistcoat with silver patterning, and a black dress shirt with a purple gradient tie. He wears black pants with a purple belt and a black holster around his left thigh, tucked into black dress boots with gold buttons. Background

On 18 June 2021, ANYCOLOR announced the launch of VIRTUAL TALENT ACADEMY (VTA), a vocational school and talent development project to help prospective Virtual YouTubers develop skills related to streaming and content creation. Applications for VTA's first generation auditions were accepted from 18 June to 5 July 2021.

On 1 November 2021, VTA opened official YouTube and Twitter accounts and revealed the names and appearances of its first generation students, including Shikinagi Akira.

On 4 November 2021, Akira held his first stream on the VTA channel. His first Tweet was made on 8 November 2021.

While the students all took part in dance, vocal, acting, and other practical lessons together, they were divided into classes for lectures and classroom-based studying in smaller groups. Akira was placed in class 2, alongside Umise Yotsuha, Kaburaki Roco, Misono Satoshi, and Suzumiya Sonata; the division was based on their streaming schedules, with class 1 streaming on Fridays and class 2 streaming on Thursdays.

Following Ranunculus' NIJISANJI debut in March 2022 and the arrival of VTA's second generation students in June 2022, the classes were re-shuffled. Akira became part of the new class 1, alongside Watarai Hibari, Kuramochi Meruto, Aokiri Mihono, Tsuyuzaki Tsuyu, Ishigami Nozomi, Warabi Raika, Kuno Orihito, Saiki Ittetsu, Mikoshiba Jin, and Usami Rito.

On 11 July 2022, in a first for NIJISANJI, ANYCOLOR unveiled a "peel-off" advertising campaign for their upcoming four-member unit "VOLTACTION", which ran from 11 July to 17 July 2022. It featured an advertisement spanning the entire length of Dogenzaka Happy Board B at covered with various flyers associated with lore for each of the respective members; peeling enough of them off would reveal their key visuals. Details regarding the actual debuts were to be disclosed at a later date.

On 13 July 2022, ANYCOLOR announced that Akira would be graduating from VTA to debut directly into NIJISANJI as part of VOLTACTION, confirmed to be the second wave of Livers formed from VTA graduates following Ranunculus' debut earlier in the year. In preparation for his debut, Akira received a full redesign, and all YouTube videos previously created during his time in VTA were hidden.

Akira's YouTube channel was created on 2 July 2022, and his Twitter account was created in June 2022. His first Tweet was made on 13 July 2022. In addition to the members' individual channels and accounts, the unit debuted with their own official YouTube channel and Twitter account. The VOLTACTION YouTube channel was created on 5 July 2022, and the unit's Twitter account was created in July 2022.

Debut

VOLTACTION started their activities on 13 July 2022 and had their first stream on 16 July 2022. Akira was the third of the group to hold his first stream. Afterwards, all four members of VOLTACTION appeared on a special debut program on NIJISANJI channel, hosted by Hanabatake Chaika and Joe Rikiichi.

The short version of VOLTACTION's first original song, "INLAID" (インレイド), was released earlier on 13 July 2022. This song was written and produced by of STEREO DIVE FOUNDATION.

  • Akira's fans and channel members are officially called "Nagi-tomo" (凪友), a combination of the character "Nagi" (凪) from his name and "tomo" (友, friend).
  • His fanmark is 📄 (document), representing a contractor's request form. His fanmarks were originally 📄 (document) and ✒️ (black pen nib), but was changed to 📄 alone shortly after his debut on 16 July 2022.
  • VOLTACTION's group of official mascots are called "Wannyaction" (わんにゃくしょん, Barkmeowtaction). Akira's representative mascot in Wannyaction is a cat named "Kuroiko" (くろいこ, the black one).

Character and lore

  • The members of VOLTACTION were originally a group of close friends - all coming from criminal or otherwise morally ambiguous backgrounds - who first met each other while attending the same boarding school, Erfolg College (エルフォルクカレッジ).
  • He and Seraph Dazzlegarden enrolled in the school as partners to carry out a long-term undercover mission for their previous employers. While they were already acquainted at that point as they had worked together prior to this, they did not meet face-to-face until becoming classmates.
  • He secretly worked as a with the ultimate goal of defecting from his family's espionage agency, something he eventually convinced Seraph to go along with as well.
  • He was an honors student and joined Erfolg College's student council alongside Fura Kanato, becoming vice-president to the latter's president - though as Seraph remarks, he probably would have preferred to have been the president himself deep down.
  • After honing their respective skills in the criminal underworld, Kanato gathered them together due to a shared desire to use these skills to instead bring happiness to people. To do so, they meet at a hidden base called the Laundry (ランドリー), and carry out missions in secret. After learning about NIJISANJI, the members decided to start streaming in addition to their activities as VOLTACTION.
  • While as a child he initially aspired to follow his parents' footsteps and live as an intelligence operative, he secretly admired the entertainers he watched on late night variety programs. He saw joining NIJISANJI as a means of making those childhood aspirations a reality.
  • He still uses some of the skills he developed as a spy as a member of VOLTACTION, primarily for intelligence gathering - for example, a near perfect ability to disguise himself as someone else. He reasons that there's no reason not to use these skills if it's for a good cause, though they are slightly rusty from disuse.
  • He describes what he did for his missions back when he was still operating as a spy as having "destroyed lives".
  • He possesses multiple fake university student ID cards that he had used for undercover infiltration missions as a spy, which he has continued to use since defecting to peruse various campus circles, including a mahjong circle.
  • His glasses are a spy tool, and are capable of projecting images, tracking the other members' movements when combined with locating transmitters, and acting as a central communications device.

  • Prior to their debut, VOLTACTION once rented a cottage together. This cottage trip gave rise to what is now known as the Yōsei-san Jiken (妖精さん事件, Mr. Fairy Incident), which both the group and their viewers have since referred to as one of their most memorable moments and is oft referenced as a running gag.
  • At the cottage, their sleeping arrangements were Kanato and Hibari sharing one bedroom and Akira and Seraph sharing another bedroom, with a clear view into each others' rooms.
  • Akira walked around stark naked in his and Seraph's bedroom on his way to the shower room, apparently drawn there by Seraph playing the violin. Because the bedroom doors were wide open, he was in full view of all three of the others, causing an uproar. The name of the incident derives from Kanato's shocked exclamation of "yōsei-san da!" (妖精さんだ！, It's a fairy!) upon noticing Akira's state of dress. Rather than being embarrassed, however, out of spite Akira walked out naked in front of them once again after finishing his shower.
  • Akira openly identifies as bisexual.
  • His "bisexual awakening" occurred when he was 9-10 years old after watching the video for "Kagamine Len no Bōsō" (鏡音レンの暴走), though he didn't definitively realize it until he was 15-16, when he started getting into BL.

On 16 July, on the day on his first stream, Akira reached 50,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel.

On 18 July, Akira reached 100,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel in less than 2 days after his debut.

On 12 January, VOLTACTION announced that that all four members would receive their second 2D outfits, and would reveal them via a stream relay with 30 minutes allotted for each member. The relay was held in the same order as their debut streams with Akira going third, revealing his second outfit at 23:30 JST that evening.

On 13 January, VOLTACTION celebrated their half-anniversary since debut by releasing their second original song, "Watercolor". The song was written and produced by the band. During a celebration stream for their half-anniversary held on the same day, they also announced the release of their second voice drama, "undertake any request", which was released that evening.

On 8 February, announced that they would be featuring Akira in the magazine's March issue.

On 31 March, Akira reached 250,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel.

On 26 April, VOLTACTION announced a 3D model debut stream relay with Akira as the first person to have his 3D model debut on 5 May. His 3D debut stream peaked at over 68,000 concurrent viewers.

On 5 July, VOLTACTION announced that they would be celebrating their first anniversary since debut with a live 3D concert, "RAISE the VOLTAGE", which was streamed for free on the group's YouTube channel on 15 July. At the concert, they debuted their third original song, "RELOAD!!!!", which was written and produced by OSTER project. On 6 January, magazine's February issue went on sale, with Akira featured alongside mangaka Harada in a special BL-focused interview segment.

On 13 January, VOLTACTION's fourth "Memories of Nostalgia" voice drama, "Fura Kanato-hen", was released.

On 26 January, horror novelist 's book "Jiyūritsu" was published, for which Akira had authored the text.

On 5 February, Shikiori no Hana released a voice drama titled "Virtual Liver wa Yume no Naka de Yume wo Miru ka".

On 6 February, Akira debuted his NIJI3D (i.e., home 3D) model.

On 9 February, volume 12 of the magazine GIRLS CONTINUE was released, featuring Akira alongside Nashi in an interview segment. It also included an exclusive short story written by Nashi with Akira as its protagonist.

On 18 April, VOLTACTION's fourth original song, "Desert Diamond", was released. It was written and produced by, and served as the ending theme for the show.

On 10 July, during a 3D off-collab stream to commemorate the milestone, VOLTACTION debuted a dance remix of "INLAID" (インレイド) and made several announcements for their second anniversary celebrations: new unit key visuals; a group cover of "Shukumei" (宿命) by ; the release of their fifth and final "Memories of Nostalgia" voice drama "Kessei-hen" and their line of second anniversary goods on 13 July; and the premiere of a documentary, "Documentary of VOLTACTION 「150 Days」".

On 14 July, an 80-minute documentary about VOLTACTION, "Documentary of VOLTACTION 「150 Days」", was released, chronicling the eponymous 150-day training process leading up to the performance of their dance remix of "INLAID" (インレイド). The project was a challenge; by completing it, they secured an eventual offline concert tour and album release. It is available to watch for free on the VOLTACTION YouTube channel.

On 27 October, VOLTACTION announced their 1st Mini Album "Action!!!!!!!!!!!!" consisting of 6 new original songs with 2 of the songs being Zeffiro and Room 4S unit songs. The album has 3 version: Regular Edition, Limited Edition A, and Limited Edition B. All the Edition has different 6th song with Regular Edition having "I can be the One", Limited Edition A having "Inlaid Dance Remix", and Limited Edition B having "Desert Diamond". Limited Edition A has a bonus Blu-ray of candid footage from "Documentary of VOLTACTION 「150 Days」", holographic pouch and slogan, and three-sided sleeve. Limited Edition B has a bonus CD of the members' solo cover of VOLTACTION original songs. The album will be released on 8 January 2025.

On 21 November, it was announced that VOLTACTION would be interviewed in and featured on the front and back covers of the special edition of the February 2025 issue of magazine, which was released on 20 December. Also on 21 November, it was announced that VOLTACTION would be the cover models as well as featured in a special article for the Winter 2024-2025 issue of magazine, which was released on 26 December.

On 27 December 2024, it was announced that VOLTACTION, along with their dance teacher gash!, would be interviewed for the 6th volume of TV Guide Astars, which was released on 23 January.

  • On 14 September, it was announced that VOLTACTION goods would be sold at Animate Girls Festival 2022, which was held from 5 November to 6 November. A secondary campaign, "Luxiem × VOLTACTION ～Secret Mission～ in AGF2022", was announced on 2 November in collaboration with NIJISANJI EN's Luxiem; those who successfully solved the campaign's riddles would receive an exclusive acrylic keyholder.
  • On 27 December, the members of VOLTACTION participated in 's Minecraft Relay 2022 ~ Minna no Story.

2023
  • On 28 April, Taito Toys released a VOLTACTION Street Style series of original collaboration goods via kuji (i.e., received goods are randomized). The goods featured original artwork of the members in streetwear, and included a poster standboard, large cushions, face towels, badge sets, posters, and rubber charm straps.
  • On 29 May, makeup brands Love Liner and iCouleur announced a collaboration with the members of VOLTACTION, with tie-in goods available to purchase from 14 June to 30 June. They featured original artwork of the members in casual clothing, and included eyeshadow palettes and liquid eyeliner designed by each member as well as acrylic stands, with stickers and postcards as purchase bonuses. The campaign also included a pop-up event at @cosme's flagship Tokyo location in Harajuku from 18 June to 19 June.
  • On 19 July, the of announced its 2023 collaboration with NIJISANJI, with Akira as one of the chosen Livers for the campaign, representing the . The collaboration included a series of goods featuring original artwork of the Livers in team regalia released via kuji, including canvas artwork, neck towels, acrylic stands, acrylic keychains, and badges; the kuji was available from 24 August to 5 September. It also included physical advertisements visible at various locations inside, which ran from 14 August to 20 August.
  • On 15 August, convenience store chain announced a sales campaign in collaboration with VOLTACTION which ran from 22 August to 4 September, with customers reaching a certain purchase threshold eligible to receive goods featuring original artwork of the members.
  • On 25 October, perfume brand Anideal announced the fourth volume of its collaboration series with NIJISANJI, this time featuring the members of VOLTACTION. The collaboration featured original fragrances designed by the members, which were released on 28 November.

2024
  • On 14 February, the eighth NIJISANJI and Sweets Paradise collaboration café was announced, with Akira featured as one of the eight Livers involved in the campaign. Participating locations served food and drink items themed after the individual Livers, with other goods featuring original artwork available for purchase both online and on location. The collaboration ran from 28 February to 27 March.
  • On 8 April, the, Japan's top tier of association football, announced a renewal of their annual partnership with NIJISANJI for the 2024 season. Akira was announced to be one of the Livers chosen for the 2024 campaign, endorsing . The collaboration included various goods featuring artwork of the Livers in team regalia, stadium advertisements, and the Livers participating in official commentary for matches.
  • On 19 May, he participated in 's Minecraft Relay 2024 ~ Shape Your World alongside Fumino Tamaki and Shibuya Hajime.
  • On 26 July, Karaoke Manekineko announced a collaboration with VOLTACTION at all 300 of its locations, with a poolside theme. The collaboration included exclusive collaboration food and drink, various exclusive goods, and campaigns involving VOLTACTION's original songs and themed rooms. The collaboration ran from 1 August to 31 August.

Identity

Room 4S
  • Room 4S is a freelance agency founded by Akira, and is also a front for VOLTACTION's activities in conjunction with Kanato's CAFE Zeffiro. Akira works as a contractor, hiring freelance agents (like Seraph) to fulfill requests sent to the agency. As such, he is technically Seraph's boss when employing him, though Seraph refuses to accept this and prefers to call him a middleman instead.
  • Akira's motivations for founding the agency were a desire to "fulfill the requests of people who live normal lives", to work on behalf of people who are in distress, and to not have to hide in the shadows and instead "live where the light can reach".
  • 4S stands for Secure, Smart, Speedy, and Secret, representing the four things that the agency promises to provide to its clients.
  • The mission requests that the agency accepts are quite varied, including finding lost pets, private detective work, bodyguard work, stolen object or missing person retrieval, neutralizing assassins, among other things.
  • In order to protect clients' privacy, the primary way clients can contact the agency is by first ordering a small espresso with four sugar cubes at CAFE Zeffiro. As orders and requests are relayed through Kanato and Watarai Hibari, it can be determined if the request warrants involving VOLTACTION as a whole; requests that are simpler or don't require as much intelligence gathering are handled by Room 4S alone.
  • The agency's motto being to "undertake any request" and Seraph often seeming to be overworked in-universe have lead to a running gag that he is a terrible boss. Kanato and Hibari have jokingly accused him of being a bad boss when Seraph had to join a VOLTACTION collab late because he was out on a mission for Akira; Seraph himself has also complained about the volume of requests that Akira takes on and referred to him as his akutoku jōshi (悪徳上司, corrupt boss) after Akira summoned him to work in the middle of his 3D model debut to fulfill a sudden urgent request.

  • His surname Shikinagi is written as 四季凪, with 四季 (shiki) meaning four seasons and 凪 (nagi) meaning calm.
  • His given name Akira is a unisex Japanese name, but is more commonly given to males. It is written in katakana (アキラ), which is usually reserved for foreign names, though it can also be used to prevent the possibility of alternate readings.
  • As a VTA student, Akira's given name was written in kanji as 聖来, with 聖 (aki, akira) meaning sacred or holy, and 来 (ra) meaning future or upcoming. His name spelled this way is his "real name". However, it was commonly misread as "Seira", which is a more feminine variant; Akira once used Seira as a placeholder name for a real-life alias.
